There are many easy ways on how to prevent bad breath or halitosis. It can be prevented with proper dental hygiene. But if this persists, consult your dentist or doctor to immediately resolve the problem. After all, you don’t like people shunning you because your breath stinks!
Brush and floss
Proper dental hygiene mainly involves the proper cleaning of the mouth using a reliable toothbrush, an anti-bacterial fluoride toothpaste followed by flossing. Brushing combined with flossing effectively removes food particles that accommodate spaces between your teeth and gums.
Clean your tongue
Your tongue should also be cleaned using a scraper after brushing your teeth. Tiny food particles also accumulate in the small spaces of your tongue and may contribute to bad breath that is why it is also essential to scrape your tongue after brushing using a tongue scraper.
The tongue provides for an ideal place for bacteria to thrive. Bacteria in the tongue produce compounds such as volatile sulfur compounds which cause bad breath. Compounds known as methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulfide usually exist in the posterior area of the tongue.
Avoid spicy food,alcohol and coffee
Certain foods with strong odor likes onions and garlic can cause bad breath instantly. Smelly sulfur compounds in garlic and onions can remain in our mouth and also absorbed by your blood. The odor of the compounds is released when the person exhales. Avoid these foods especially on occasions when you will have to face and talk with people.
Alcoholic drinks as well as coffee can form a favorable environment for growth of bacteria while generating a drying effect of saliva, eventually causing bad breath.
When drinking coffee cannot be avoided, try to drink many glasses of water to arrest the drying effect resulting from the drinking of coffee.
Drink lots of water
Drinking 8 glasses of water everyday is not only effective in washing out unwanted particles in your body but also effective in preventing dehydration and a cost-effective way to prevent bad breath.
Mouthwash regularly
A very effective way to get rid of bad breath is the use of mouthwash. It is an antiseptic solution that can reduce the microbial substances in your oral cavity.
Mouthwash should always be part of your oral hygiene routine since it can kill the bacterial plaque that forms in our gums and which causes not only gingivitis but also bad breath. Anti-cavity mouth rinses contain fluoride which protects against tooth decay which is also known to cause bad breath.
